Charging the Crossroads
Indiana’s Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Network
Charging the Crossroads is the Indiana Department of Transportation’s plan to build an electric vehicle (EV) charging network along Indiana’s interstates and highways.
Funded through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, Indiana’s effort feeds into a national initiative to create a network of reliable chargers across the U.S. to support the growing adoption of electric vehicles.

Program Update
Charging the Crossroads is funded by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. On August 11, 2025 the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) released revised guidance for the NEVI Formula Program streamlining requirements and giving states greater flexibility to accelerate deployment.
As a first step under the revised guidance, INDOT has resumed the contracting process for contingent awards announced in 2024.
More information about future phases of Charging the Crossroads, including anticipated installation of charging stations funded by the program, will be shared as it becomes available. INDOT’s EV Infrastructure Deployment Plan can be found here.

EV Partner Directory
The Charging the Crossroads EV Partner Directory is intended to connect individuals or organizations that are seeking partners or are open to partnering on an electric vehicle infrastructure project.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Charging the Crossroads?
Charging the Crossroads is the Indiana Department of Transportation’s (INDOT) plan to build an electric vehicle (EV) charging network along Indiana’s federally designated Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs).
What are Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs)?
Alternative Fuel Corridors are interstates or highways that have been designated to support the installation of EV infrastructure at strategic locations along major national highways. Click here to view a map of Indiana’s AFCs.
How is Charging the Crossroads funded?
Charging the Crossroads is funded through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. The NEVI program is a federally funded initiative where up to 80% of project costs are covered by federal funds and the remaining match is covered by award recipients. The federal funds are required to be spent only on the NEVI program.
Where will Charging the Crossroads charging stations be located?
Federal guidance for the NEVI program requires charging stations to be located along Indiana’s Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs).
What is the latest update on the Charging the Crossroads program?
On August 11, 2025, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) released revised guidance for the NEVI program, streamlining requirements and giving states greater flexibility to accelerate deployment.
As a first step under the revised guidance, INDOT has resumed the contracting process for contingent awards announced in 2024. How does updated federal guidance change Charging the Crossroads
Updated federal guidance removes several requirements, allowing INDOT to focus on delivering reliable, accessible charging infrastructure that meets the needs of Hoosier drivers and supports Indiana’s growing EV market.
For example, while charging stations funded by the program are still required to be located along federally designated Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs), they are no longer required to be placed every 50 miles, or within one mile of an AFC.
